English Department controversy clippings [manuscript], 1967 February 10-16.

Three issues of the Cavalier Daily and one handbill detail the resignation of George Garrett, allegedly over "publish or perish" demands. The charges were denied by department chairman Fredson Bowers and a retraction handbill issued by the Cavalier Daily. The final article discusses the non renewal of assistant professor John T. Mayer's contract and the English Dept.'s drive for national prominence and emphasis on graduate teaching by professors with "impressive publications."

George Garrett (1929-2008) was a novelist and poet who taught at Hollins University and the University of Virginia.
